TCF 444 Producing for the Newsroom is a class where students learn how to produce newscasts, special features, and news documentaries. I taught this class in Spring 2012, Spring 2013, Spring 2014, and Spring 2015. In 2013 and 2014, I turned the class into a cross-country producing class collaborating with Scott Hodgson at the University of Oklahoma as students edited under our direction on Communicating Superstorm Sandy and individual segments of the Tuscaloosa and Joplin tornadoes. The class also produces 2-3 newscasts per semester and I take students to Birmingham and Atlanta TV stations to observe newsrooms and learn more about different positions behind the scenes.
